WESTBORO – About 100 families have been forced to leave their homes for a week after a fire broke out at the Turnpike Road apartment complex in Westboro.
Firefighters say they responded to 293 Turnpike Road around 8:40 a.m. Monday for reports of heavy smoke coming from a seventh-floor apartment.
Not only the smoke caused problems, according to the fire brigade there was also heavy water damage.
Sonia Pereira was at work when she received a panicked call from her daughter about the fire on Monday morning. “How do you move an entire building; where do these people ultimately go?” Pereira said. “It’s frustrating, it’s frustrating, I just want to cuss everyone out.”
Power will be restored next week
Residents said they received letters from apartment management stating that because the power was turned off, no one can remain in the building until next Monday while crews work to restore power.
Pereira said renters insurance didn’t help. “It’s ridiculous with the current economy, trying to stay in a hotel with no accommodation because there is no accommodation. We have to figure out what to do. Thank God we have family nearby,” Pereira added.
For residents like Abhishek Pandey, his wife and his baby, the big question is: “When can we go back to our apartments? That is the most important question I have right now and everyone has the same question,” Pandey said. .
Pandey said he and his family, like many other residents, went to a hotel and weren’t sure if they would be compensated. The fire is still under investigation.
