A 25-year-old Kansas City woman accused of driving drunk and hitting a bicyclist, killing him, has been charged with driving under the influence, court documents show.
Emily A. Davis faces one felony charge of driving under the influence resulting in the death of another person. During her initial court appearance on Tuesday, Davis pleaded not guilty.
Davis was driving south on NW Tullison Road in Platte County around 5:30 a.m. Monday when her red Chevrolet Cruze struck the back of 25-year-old Xavier Anderson’s bicycle, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
The force of the impact threw Anderson from his bike, which hit a utility pole near the road and broke into several pieces, according to court documents.
Anderson was taken to North Kansas City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m. Monday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. He was not wearing a helmet.
After a piece of debris from Davis’ car was found at the crash scene, a Riverside police officer pulled Davis over at a traffic circle about a half-mile from where the crash occurred, court documents said. When an MSHP officer arrived at the traffic circle around 7 a.m., he determined that Davis had been drinking.
Davis allegedly told police she had spent most of the previous night at the Argosy Casino, where she had been drinking from about 10 p.m. Sunday night until about 2 a.m. Monday morning, court documents show.
Davis is being held in the Platte County Detention Center on $50,000 bail. She is next scheduled to appear in Platte County District Court at 9 a.m. Oct. 1.
Anderson’s death was the 62nd traffic fatality recorded by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 2024, according to MSHP data. Those deaths occurred during 58 fatal crashes, according to MSHP data.
According to MSHP data, since the beginning of 2024, there have been 321 drunk driving crashes in Missouri, resulting in five deaths and 122 injuries.
