South Korean startup Lee Mobility Company announced this week that it has received a round of investment from Bluepoint Partners, a local early-stage startup, to commercialize its electric vehicle fire suppression technology. The company did not disclose the amount of the investment or the terms.
The news comes amid heightened focus on EV battery safety in South Korea following a major fire in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the city of Incheon earlier this month, which started in a parked Mercedes-Benz EQE. The fire destroyed more than 100 vehicles in the complex and injured 23 people. Separate reports suggest that more than 70 EV fires were reported in the country last year.
Lee Mobility develops fire fighting equipment mainly focused on electric vehicles. Its products have recently been awarded by the South Korea Public Procurement Service, making Lee Mobility a direct supplier to government agencies.
One solution is an onboard device attached to the bottom of a battery pack that can penetrate the EV battery and extinguish a fire in about 10 minutes, preventing it from spreading. The company has also developed an automated stationary fire extinguishing system for EV charging stations.
“Lee Mobility Gets Funding for Electric Vehicle Firefighting” was originally conceived and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData brand.
