Lions waive WR Denzel Mims after ankle injury

NFL training camps are officially in full swing, with veterans covering the entire league. Stay tuned with Yahoo Sports on breaking news, highlights, injuries, holdouts and everything else you need to know.

The Detroit Lions would have waived wide receiver Denzel Mims with an injury title on Friday NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He reportedly suffered knee and calf injuries more than two weeks ago and has not been on the practice field since.

Mims, 25, joined the Lions a month ago after Detroit traded him a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick to the New York Jets and a 2025 seventh-round pick. sixth round back, however, as the compensation sent to the Jets was contingent on Mims making the 53-man roster.

Now the 2020 second round pick will rehabilitate his injuries without a team. Mims has been incredibly disappointing since entering the league as Baylor’s number 59. He has just 42 receptions for 676 yards and no touchdowns in 30 games over the past three seasons. Mims failed to move up the depth chart during his time with New York, becoming expendable after the Jets added Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman in free agency.

Lions WR Jameson Williams out with hamstring injury

Detroit Lions sophomore wideout Jameson Williams will likely miss the rest of the preseason with a hamstring injury he sustained in practice Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell later confirmed “there’s a good chance” Williams’ injury will last throughout the preseason. He also joked that he doesn’t expect to have Williams for the first six games of the regular season either, though that stems from a six-game suspension Williams received after the NFL discovered he and others were participating in sports betting. Williams reportedly gambled on college games in team facilities, in violation of the league’s sports betting policy.

Williams reportedly stopped limping on a deep passing drill Wednesday and grabbed his right hamstring. He missed a few workouts earlier this summer with a left hamstring injury.

It’s another setback for Williams, who was drafted No. 12 overall by the Lions in 2022. He missed the first 11 games of last season while recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in college. Williams played 78 snaps in six games in 2022, catching just one of the night’s goals — a 41-yard touchdown in a Week 17 win over the NFC North rival Chicago Bears. Williams caught two passes for 18 yards on 51 offensive snaps in his first preseason play against the New York Giants last week.

The first game Williams will be allowed to play in 2023 – if he is healthy – is Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens. For now, he will have to sit, watch and recover from his injury.

Treylon Burks’ knee injury is not as serious as it initially seemed.

The Tennessee Titans wide receiver, who was taken off the field during joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, sprained his LCL, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

While the injury was a concern at first, Burks is now expected to miss just a few weeks.

Burks caught a deep pass from Ryan Tannehill during joint practice on Wednesday and stumbled into the end zone before falling down. When he got up again, Burks immediately started limping.

He was eventually helped off the field and attended to by trainers before being taken off the field.

“You hate to see that,” Tannehill said through ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “We’ll find out more information and see what’s really going on, but hopefully he’ll be okay. He obviously seemed upset, which was understandable. Our thoughts and prayers are with him now, and hopefully he’s okay. “

According to Rapoport, Burks is now expected to be sidelined for just a few weeks. The Titans open their season on September 10 against the New Orleans Saints, just over three weeks away. It is unclear if he will be ready to leave in Week 1.

The 23-year-old Burks recorded 444 receiving yards last season and scored one touchdown in 11 games. The Titans selected him with the number 18 overall pick in last year’s draft from Arkansas.

The Titans and Vikings will face off in their preseason game on Saturday.
