Long Island businesses are collecting donations for California fire victims

BABYLON, NY — Long Island comes together for Los Angeles with donation campaigns aimed at obtaining new items the thousands affected by the California fires.

Organizers of each effort say monetary donations greatly help with shipping or delivering the items, but even if you can’t donate, spreading the message makes a big difference.

Babylon companies collect everyday essentials to donate

Joseph DeBello collects daily necessities from his Babylon companies, Hitch and BesTea, to send to those who lost everything in the wildfires. Specifically, he collects new, unused items.

“They don’t have the manpower to clean the used stuff,” he said. “It’s something they can open and use right away.”

The community efforts, in partnership with the Babylon Rotary Club and other local businesses, are a big shot in the arm for DeBello.

Greenvale store is collecting new children’s clothing to send to California fire victims

Christina Connelly announced on social media that her Greenvale store, Tutti, is collecting new children’s clothing donations.

“It was overwhelming. Everyone came by, dropped off new stuff, bought things to donate,” he said.

The items she collects will be shipped to the three California children’s clothing companies that launched this initiative: Mini Dreamers, Cala Kids and Meant 2 Be Kids.

“Each of us knows a handful of people who have been personally affected,” said Melody Nabati, owner of Mini Dreamers.

“Customers, family, friends who have lost everything,” said Nicole Nabati, owner of Meant 2 Be Kids.

“And I feel like it’s the least we can do,” Melody Nabati said.

The business owners have created a login for families to request free packages of the new clothing and have already received 600 responses.

“As a mother, I can’t like it… I can’t imagine what they’re going through, these families who have nothing, nothing left. So it’s like the little thing that we can do,” Nicole Nabati said.

“So they know we’re thinking of them. And we’re sending them lots of love,” said Melody Nabati.
