LOONA’s Yves and Hyeju speak out during protests following the failed vote on the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon

President Yoon Suk Yeol publicly apologized on Thursday following widespread criticism of his controversial declaration of martial law earlier this month. “I am very sorry for causing concern among our citizens,” Yoon said in a televised address. His comments come as nationwide protests continue, fueled by public outrage over what many see as an erosion of democracy.

Opposition against Yoon increased following his government’s attempts to justify the declaration of martial law as a measure to maintain stability in the face of civil unrest. Opponents claim it was a disproportionate response that infringed on the freedoms of South Koreans.

Despite growing discontent, the National Assembly failed to vote on impeachment, leaving Yoon in office for the time being. The narrowly defeated motion did little to quell public anger, with demonstrators gathering in major cities demanding his resignation.

Among those joining the movement are prominent South Korean celebrities, including members of the popular girl group LOONA. Yves, a member of the group, expressed her solidarity with the protesters in a heartfelt statement:

“Every day I think about ways I can help, even from afar… It’s cold, so everyone, be careful not to catch a cold. Thank you very much!”

Her bandmate, Hyeju, took her activism one step further by attending a protest and sharing a photo of the event on social media. In her caption she addressed possible criticism of her participation:

“Some people may feel uncomfortable with me expressing my opinion on this, but I am a citizen of this country before I am an idol, so I think this is the right thing to do. Let’s be strong!!!!”

Support from high-profile figures like Yves and Hyeju has energized younger protesters, many of whom see the idols as a reflection of their own values.
