Maddow Blog | Mini-report from Monday, 9.16.24

Today’s quick hits.

* In Florida: “Ryan Wesley Routh has been indicted on two federal charges: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. During his initial court appearance, he revealed that he has a 25-year-old son. When asked about his income, he told the judge that he has no money to his name and owns two trucks in Hawaii that are each worth about $1,000. He appeared calm and nonchalant in court as he answered the judge’s questions.”

* In related news: “President Joe Biden on Monday condemned the potential assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, saying there is ‘no place for political violence in America.’ … ‘In America, we resolve our differences peacefully, through the ballot box, not with a gunshot,’ Biden said during a speech at a conference in Philadelphia honoring historically black colleges and universities.”

* It continues: “Two Springfield City School District elementary schools were evacuated Monday due to unspecified threats and information from local law enforcement, a district spokesperson said in a statement.”

* Wall Street: “The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a new all-time high after recovering early September losses. The S&P 500 rose close to its own record but was held back by losses at Big Tech companies like Apple and Nvidia.”

* In Iraq: “Four top insurgent leaders were killed last month in one of the largest counterterrorism operations against the Islamic State in Iraq in recent years, the U.S. military said Friday, dealing a major blow to the group at a time when attacks are increasing in Iraq and Syria.”

* In Georgia: “On Friday, a special prosecutor announced that Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones will not be charged with attempting to overturn Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election. Peter Skandalakis, who heads the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, a legal agency that assists prosecutors across the state, said in a statement that he considered the case closed.”

* It sounds like good news for Wilson in South Carolina: “Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., announced in a video on X today that he has recovered after being hospitalized last Tuesday following a breakdown.”

* This is a tough read, but it’s important and worth it: “At least two women in Georgia died after they were denied access to legal abortions and timely medical care in their state, ProPublica found. This is one of their stories.”
