A man died in police custody after crashing into a fence in Long Beach on Friday.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers were called to the 5300 block of Cerritos Avenue just before 6 p.m. after learning of an accident in the area.

They arrived on scene to find that the man had just crashed through the gate of a house and ended up in the backyard. There he was handcuffed, police said.

Paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department were also called to the scene, where they assisted the man before taking him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

He has not yet been identified pending notification of next of kin.

Because the man was in handcuffs at the time of death, police are investigating the incident as a death in custody. They say no violence was used.

Anyone with information is asked to contact LBPD at (562) 570-7244.
