A 38-year-old man was sentenced to a total of more than 200 years to life for killing three people, the attempted murders of two other people and other crimes in Oakland dating back to 2009, Alameda County prosecutors said.
Joseph Carroll received 197 years to life plus 10 years and four months in prison for the deaths of Nguyen Ngo, Nehemiah Lewis, Andrew Henderson Jr., and the attempted murders of Deandre Ware and Bao Ngo after a jury verdict, the Alameda County District Reported the Public Prosecution Service in a statement on Tuesday.
During the trial, prosecutors said Carroll killed Nguyen Ngo in a drive-by shooting in Oakland on April 23, 2009. He also tried to kill Nguyen’s brother, Bao Ngo, who was injured in the shooting.
Carroll attempted to kill a man identified as Ware on May 3, 2010. On June 11, 2010, he shot Lewis as the victim got out of a car in Oakland.
Based on evidence and testimony, Carroll also killed Henderson on April 13, 2011, in another drive-by shooting in Oakland.
District Attorney Pamela Price said the case exposed a “level and extent of violence that was outrageous and completely unacceptable in our county.”
“Sadly, no amount of time can heal the pain inflicted on the families of the victims. However, the verdict reflects the need to protect public safety from this type of violence,” Price said.
