Catalina Aceves was remembered in a GoFundMe campaign as “a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt and best friend”
A man who authorities say committed suicide at a Nevada casino has been linked to the murder of a woman in California.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a casino in Reno, Nevada, according to a statement from the Yuba City Police Department in California. It is unclear when the man was found.
After the discovery, Reno police asked Yuba City police to conduct a welfare check on a woman. On Sunday, Aug. 25, officers went to the woman’s apartment and found her dead, the news release said. Police said the deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide and did not share any information about a possible connection between the two.
PEOPLE reached out to Yuba City police for comment on Thursday, September 5, but has not yet received a response.
The woman’s name has not been released by police, but her loved ones identified her as 38-year-old Catalina Aceves through a GoFundMe campaign set up to cover funeral expenses.
The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed the woman’s identity, adding that Aceves was killed on Aug. 25, ABC 10 reports.
“Cathy was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt and best friend,” Marisela Aceves wrote on the fundraising page. “She was a joyful, soulful and spiritual woman who was a guiding light to all who had the pleasure of having her in their lives.”
