“It’s something we have to do and I wish more people would understand what veterans have done and continue to do for our country,” said Dennis Newara, a Vietnam War veteran.
For Dennis Newara, it is a privilege to be a veteran.
Every day of the year he wears a badge of honor, but on days like Saturday it shines extra brightly.
Newara, along with his fellow brothers and sisters of Vietnam Vets Chapter 435, lead the Veterans Day Parade every year.

It will start at Veterans Stadium and march south on State Street, ending at the Erie VA Medical Center.
“My father, his three brothers, were in World War II and it was almost like I had to do it even though I was drafted,” Newara said.
The Vietnam veteran has advice for younger generations considering serving.
“Those young men and women, I talked to a couple last night at our Legion in Wesleyville. They seem committed and on the right track,” Newara said. “There’s always debate about this, that or the other, but it’s still America and we still have to act as one united country.”

Representatives from the state, schools and other organizations such as Purple Heart Chapter 197 also participated in the parade.
“I am always honored to participate in these events and showcase the one-percenters who made the ultimate sacrifice or those who were able to survive their injuries,” said Brian Fuller, a commander of the Northwest PA Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Fuller said not only is the region extremely supportive, but the people of Erie also have a strong representation of those who have served.
“Sacrifice is not in vain,” Fuller said. “Thank you to the community that came out today and to everyone who supports the military or the purple heart.”
