Matt Gaetz’s show on the far-right network is memorable – for all the wrong reasons

Matt Gaetz’s brand new show on the far-right One America News Network started off with an absolutely bizarre appearance.

It was unclear who applied the disgraced congressman’s makeup, but the combination of very light concealer around his eyes and dark foundation on the rest of his face created a strange look, like a sort of Hamburglar in reverse.

That distracting appearance turned out to be the only memorable thing about his first episode. Gaetz spent 60 minutes wading through conservative talking points in front of a cheap-looking green screen, all in an effort to continue his time in the public eye.

Gaetz revisited the insurrection on January 6 – four years later – visiting “the disgraced office of Liz Cheney,” the centrist Republican who served on the committee that investigated that insurrection.

Elsewhere, much of the show was generally self-serving. Gaetz played a video of him being a nuisance in the House of Representatives — he was part of the 2023 debacle when Republicans gained 15 votes before electing a speaker — and claimed he was “physically attacked” for his position.

It turns out that the waffle may have been intended to fill time. As a politician, Gaetz’s only real success was becoming perhaps the most hated person in Congress, and it showed in the quality of his guests.

Lauren Boebert, the Colorado congresswoman best known for her anti-LGBTQ+ views, repeating Islamophobic comments and fondling someone during a musical, was first in line. Gaetz announced Boebert as the show’s “riot of the day” – words accompanied on screen by an amateurish image on fire.

A breathless Boebert spoke loudly and humorlessly for several minutes about nothing in particular before being waved off by Gaetz, who claimed without evidence that “so many Americans are comforted that you are standing in the gap for the America First agenda.”

Next up was Thomas Massie, the sweatiest man in Congress that ever was called “a third-rate grandstander” of Donald Trump. Massie suggested that the House of Representatives should make eliminating the biennial time change a priority.

It was pretty lame, and I wasn’t the only one who thought so. A clip from the show shared on the OAN YouTube channel on the day of Gaetz’s somber debut has only been viewed 2,600 times in the 13 days since it was posted.

The only interesting thing I found regarding Gaetz’s new home on OAN was an item on the website in which Gaetz is advertising two different intestinal worm medications. That kind of thing rarely appears on mainstream news sites, but OAN presumably knows its audience.

Gaetz turned to One America News after his political career fell apart in late 2024. As a congressman, he has represented Florida since 2017. He was nominated by Donald Trump as attorney general in November, but withdrew from consideration eight days later amid investigations into longstanding allegations. of sexual misconduct, including having sex with a minor.

However, that did not disqualify him from the job at OAN, which announced Gaetz’s hiring in December. An excited Gaetz elaborated on his role in a speech at a Turning Point Action event that month.

“I was known as a feisty, tough and sometimes exciting congressman,” said Gaetz, offering a rather generous interpretation of his time in office.

“One America News is a spirited, tough, exciting news organization and I am thrilled to join their lineup.”

On December 23, two weeks after OAN announced Gaetz’s hiring, a House ethics report found “substantial evidence” that Gaetz paid for sex with a minor, among other serious violations of state law and congressional rules. Now that OAN itself is struggling — it’s been dropped by all the major cable networks and can only be viewed on three mysterious platforms called “Vidgo,” “GCI” and “KlowdTV” — the network may see retaining Gaetz as a necessary role considers. of the dice.

If so, it was a bad throw. In the days since Gaetz’s debut, the content of his show — and the quality of his guests — has not improved.

George Santos, a disgraced congressman who won the election by essentially lying about every aspect of his life before being convicted of defrauding donors and stealing the identities of nearly a dozen people, was one of the featured guests at what probably should have been a light-hearted meeting. segment about the Gaetz makeup fiasco.

“Matt Gaetz, let me tell you something: highlighter is not for you. Stop emphasizing the center of your face, it makes your eyes very small,” Santos told the host.

“When I saw the images I was worried. I thought you had messed up Botox or something.”

Of course, putting on makeup in a way that makes it look like your face has been dipped in a chocolate cake isn’t mutually exclusive if Gaetz has a botox botox, but at least it was a reprieve from the other third-rate. guests that Gaetz has managed to attract.

Dressed in a black suit with a poorly knotted tie, Gaetz welcomed Rudy Giuliani — Republicans who have become persona non grata seem to find a home on the show — and asked him what Democrats had planned for Trump’s second term.

Giuliani, who in 2023 was ordered to pay nearly $150 million to two Georgia election workers he defamed, clearly had no idea, and the conversation stalled. On YouTube, the clip has been viewed 10,000 times — fewer than 6,000 people watched the conversation with Santos — which isn’t the kind of number that will revive OAN or Gaetz’s fortunes.

It leads to the conclusion that the Matt Gaetz show ultimately has a lot in common with the man himself. It’s memorable, but only for the wrong reasons, it looks terrible and – based on those ratings – ultimately unpopular.
