Mets, Yankees among ‘most aggressive suitors’ for White Sox LHP Garrett Crochet: Report

The Mets and Yankees have already battled it out over the superstar outfielder Juan Soto in free agency this offseason, and it appears the crosstown rivals could face off again, but this time on the trade market.

While there are numerous teams in the mix, both New York clubs would be among the “most aggressive suitors” in a trade for the left-handed Chicago White Sox. Garrett hook as of Monday, according to the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The Phillies, Red Sox and Orioles are also among the teams interested in acquiring the lefty.

While there is no talk of a deal at this time, Rosenthal notes that the Mets appear to have an edge in the sweepstakes due to the surplus of young talent they can offer, and that the White Sox are looking for hitters in return who are ready for the big league.

Now that Chicago’s agricultural system lacks top talent, young people are like Luisangel Acuna, Jet Williams, Drew Gilbert, Brett BatyAnd Ronny Mauricio could possibly be interesting.

Crochet would certainly cost the Mets a pretty penny in any deal, but adding a young and manageable talent – under team control for the next two seasons – would certainly be an excellent way to David Sterns to complete a takeoff rotation that still lacks the necessary top arm.

For the Yankees, Crochet could help make up for the loss of Soto by joining a star-studded trio in addition to ace. Gerrit Kool and left-handed Carlos Rodon.

The 25-year-old moved into the rotation for the first time last season and put together a stellar All-Star showing, posting a 3.58 ERA and 1.06 WHIP while striking out 209 batters and walking just 33 in a career-high 146. innings.

With all the interest, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Crochet will be dealt during this week’s MLB Winter Meetings.
