(CBS DETROIT) – An Oakland County jury has found a Pontiac man guilty of second-degree murder and other charges in connection with the fatal shooting that left a man dead after he spat in the victim’s sink, officials said.
Sadarie Deshawn Donalson was found guilty of second-degree murder, weapons possession, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting and obstructing a police officer in connection with the gunshot death of Cornelius James Jones, also of Pontiac, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office said.
A co-defendant, Dewaun Demarco Benion, had previously pleaded guilty to assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm in connection with the incident.
The shooting happened on February 21 in Jones’ apartment.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the co-defendants were at the victim’s apartment for a party when Benion and Jones got into an argument after Donalson spat in Jones’ sink.
The suspects left when Jones told them to, but the two men then came back inside and Benion started a physical fight with Jones.
After the fight ended, Donalson shot the victim twice. Authorities responded to the apartment and both suspects were arrested.
Donalson will remain in the Oakland County Jail until his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 10.
Benion was sentenced on August 8 to one year in prison, minus the 169 days he had already served.
“This was a senseless murder that arose from a trivial conflict,” said Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald. “I commend the work of law enforcement and the trial team to hold these defendants accountable for this murder. My office will continue to work to protect our community from gun violence and violent crime, and we will work to hold dangerous criminals accountable for their actions to the fullest extent of the law.”
