Minnesota content creator prepares for possible TikTok ban

MINNEAPOLIS – Fans of TikTok and content creator Sue Rose know she and her family moved to Minnesota last year.

“It’s so fun to see people’s reactions to how much I love the snow,” Rose said. “It’s something I’ll always do.”

That’s her plan, whether the app goes dark or not.

Friday has the The Supreme Court upheld a law that would lead to a ban on the app. The court said the law does not violate the First Amendment rights of its 170 million users, nearly half the U.S. population.

The law forces TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app by Sunday.

“The question then becomes whether TikTok single-handedly takes their app offline, goes black, or whether the app stores take it down,” said William Schultz, an internet and technology attorney at Merchant & Gould.

If the company removes the app, the app will no longer work.

If app stores remove it, the app will work as long as TikTok continues to work.

But there is a warning.

“President Biden’s administration has announced that it will not enforce the law that takes effect on Sunday. President Trump has also indicated that he wants some form of delay to reach a deal,” Schultz said.

Rose says the potential ban could hurt creators like herself.

“TikTok was my main income in the beginning. Now that I can be on other platforms, it’s very divisive. But it’s definitely going to be a hit for us and a lot of other creators as well,” she said.

The potential ban, Rose says, won’t stop her or the community she created.

“I just want them all to come hang out,” she said. “This work that I do gives me the opportunity to be with my children. I don’t want to miss that, so I keep going.”

Rose moved to the United States from Germany and lived in California before moving to Minnesota.

She lives with her husband and their four children. She can be found on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
