Minnesota Zoo’s new treetop walkway gives visitors an unexpected shock

APPLE VALLEY, minus — A new trail at the Minnesota Zoo that opened late last month has left guests dazzled…even a little shocked.

The Treetop Trail opened in July and, at 1.2 miles and 33 feet above the ground, is said to be the longest elevated pedestrian loop in the world, offering a unique perspective on some of the zoo’s most popular animals.

This week, the zoo admitted that those participating in the trial may feel a few blows as they traverse the length. A number of WCCO watchers spotted the problem and the zoo told us that the trail is built with natural materials and they can cause a natural shock.

“With the use of recycled composite decking on the Treetop Trail, static electricity can sometimes be experienced along the side metal safety rails, similar to what can be experienced on many playground structures,” said zoo spokesman Zach Nugent. “This naturally occurring phenomenon can vary based on environmental conditions and usually occurs during dry, low-moisture conditions.”

The zoo has posted signs at trail access points to ensure guests are aware of the phenomenon.

Construction of the Treetop Trail integrated the retired monorail track and took about a year to build. Zoo director John Frawley said the idea came after a trip to New York.

“Our friends took us on the high line, an elevated treetop path that was converted into a railroad track path above Manhattan,” he explained.

Visitors can see tigers, moose, bison, birds, and other animals from the elevated trail. The entrance will feature a new habitat featuring native Minnesota species, including the trail’s ambassador, a porcupine named Quillber.

The Treetop Trail is included in the admission fee and is open all year round. The trail is open to all zoo guests on Fridays from 11am to 2pm, Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. Contact the zoo for more information about opening hours.
