Mitch McConnell says that Trump’s rates will “increase the costs of everything ‘

Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, verse from the end of his 18-year term as a senate-republican leader, is opposed to threatening rates imposed by President Donald Trump.

Trump signed orders on Saturday that will impose 25% rates for goods imported from Mexico and Canada, together with a rate of 10% on Chinese goods. On Monday, Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Announced that the rates in the country will be postponed for a month.

“It will result in the costs of everything,” said McConnell in an interview with CBS’s “60 minutes” that was broadcast on Sunday. “In other words, it will be paid by American consumers.”

He also noticed that Mexico and Canada have long been American allies: “Why would you want to argue with your allies about this?”

Trump has said that the rates were designed to force the governments of Mexico, Canada and China to stop the flow of illegal drugs to the United States.

The rates will come into effect on Tuesday morning at midnight and the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced retribution rates. Democrats have largely opposed the move of Trump and also claim that it will increase the costs of consumer goods from those countries.

McConnell, an old Trump critic, is not the only republican who criticizes the rates.

“Rates are just taxes,” wrote Senator Rand Paul van Kentucky on X. “Conservatives once united against new taxes. Tax trade will mean less trade and higher prices.”

McConnell also said that despite his criticism of Trump on rates – together with his conviction that January 6 is a rebellion for which Trump is responsible – he is probably usually on the same page with the president.

“I expect to support the most of what this administration is trying to achieve,” said McConnell. “So what happened in the past is not relevant to me.”
