The Walmart in Monkey Junction remained closed Sunday morning after an employee was shot during an attempted shoplifting Saturday evening.
A security guard was at the store early Sunday to inform customers that the store in southern New Hanover County is closed, and told StarNews that the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is also making the rounds.
According to the sheriff’s office, several Walmart employees tried to prevent a man from shoplifting at the store at 5135 Carolina Beach Road on Saturday around 6 p.m.
A struggle occurred and “the suspect brandished a firearm and fired one shot, striking a Walmart employee,” according to a news release.
The victim died on the spot.
The suspect fled but was confronted by a deputy in the parking lot and was taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
A Walmart employee told StarNews the store could reopen Monday.
The victim’s name had not been released as of Sunday morning. The sheriff’s office has also not yet released the suspect’s name or the charges against him.
