Mookie Betts is Ronald Acuna Jr. already passed as NL MVP betting favorite

Ronald Acuna Jr. walked away with the National League MVP last season, and rightly so. The Atlanta Braves outfielder had a season for the ages.

But still, there were some who argued that Mookie Betts should be MVP. Even though it was short-sighted, it provided momentum for Betts in 2024.

Betts is doing his part just days into the season. Another big night on Tuesday for one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ many stars pushed him up the BetMGM odds board. By Wednesday morning, Betts had passed Acuna as the NL MVP favorite. Betts has +450 odds to win MVP at BetMGM, and Acuna is right behind at +500.

We’re less than a week into the season and there will likely be a lot of changes in MVP odds over the next six months. But given how well Betts has played since last summer, he might not leave his favorite spot.

Mookie Betts got off to a blazing start

It can’t be a much smaller sample size, but Betts is off to a ridiculous start this season.

Through eight games, he is hitting .500 with an OPS of 1.772. His home run on Tuesday was his fifth of the season, which gives him the lead in the MLB. Betts leads MLB in runs, hits, home runs, RBI, batting average, on base percentage and OPS.

The season has only just started and no one should really care who is leading the league in the first week of April, but it’s not like this is too out of the norm for Betts.

Betts was fantastic from last season’s all-star break. He hit .455 with 11 home runs in August. Betts already has an MVP, as a member of the Boston Red Sox in 2018. He has long been one of the best players in the game, playing for one of the MLB’s best teams in one of the best lineups.

And to add to that, he has undergone a remarkable change in position.

Betts shifts position

Betts is 31 years old and in his first 1,165 games before this season, he had started just 12 times at shortstop. During spring training, the Dodgers decided to make Betts their regular shortstop. You can’t ask anyone that, but Betts is a special player. He started six games this season at shortstop and two at second baseman.

Not that Betts needs an additional story for an MVP push, but if he becomes a regular shortstop for the first time in his 11th MLB season, this would come up a lot in August and September when MVP is debated.

Other players get hot and increase the odds. Betts has at least two teammates, Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani, who will be in the MVP conversation all season. Acuna should have another great season with a fantastic Braves team. Betts will have challengers. And injuries always play a role in the MVP race.

But Bets took a lead very early in the race. He is now the favorite and there are good reasons to believe he will be in that spot when the season ends.
