PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Fun in the sun just got a little cooler. More than 90 water play areas are opening in Philadelphia to give the city’s residents a safe way to beat the heat for free.

Philadelphia’s spraygrounds, splash pads and sprinklers will open Friday, May 24 at 1 p.m. and will be open to the public until early July.

One of the the city’s newest spray areas built at the Guerin Recreation Center in South Philadelphia will be open for its first summer season.

“There was no pool here,” Parks and Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson said. “So they didn’t have the opportunity to cool off in a pool. If we can open a new facility, we’re very excited about that, and this is perfect timing for us to open this water park.”

Where are Philadelphia’s injection sites and when are they open?

Phila.gov has a full map and searchable list of the city’s injection sites online.

  • Weekends: 12:00 – 17:00

After July:

  • Weekdays: 11am – 7pm
  • Weekends: 12:00 – 17:00

The accessibility of the spraying sites in the city can change based on weather conditions.

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation suggests bringing sunscreen, a t-shirt, water shoes, dry clothing and a towel to safely enjoy the spraygrounds.
