Murder suspect leads police on chase, crashes car after shooting himself on US-68, police say

A chase involving a murder suspect ended after the suspect crashed on US-68 in Clark County on Wednesday.

A man called Springfield dispatchers and told them he had shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in the 700 block of Villa Road, according to a Springfield Police Department sergeant.

A chase began with the suspect, eventually leading to southbound US-68.

As the suspect approached State Route 41, officers heard a gunshot come from the car and it then crashed into the guardrail and pole, the sergeant said.

When officers approached the car, they saw that the driver had a gunshot wound to the head.

The man is being transported to a local hospital for treatment, his current condition is unknown.

US-68 is closed in the area while police investigate.
