Neighbors say drivers repeatedly race and crash on Cobb Street

People in a Cobb County neighborhood say speeding on their street is becoming increasingly dangerous.

This week, a driver crashed and flipped his car on Bankstone Drive. The speed limit on the road is clearly posted as 35 miles per hour, but neighbors said some drivers are going much faster than the limit.

Channel 2’s Audrey Washington was in Cobb County on Thursday, where she spoke with neighbor Valerie Broadway, who heard an accident on Tuesday.

“I heard a loud noise. I saw a car overturned there,” Broadway said.

She suspects the driver was speeding on Bankstone Drive and overturned.

Neighbors rushed to help the vehicle up while emergency responders helped the driver. But Broadway said this wasn’t the first crash.

“There was one next to me that hit a tree and flipped over, and that was about four months ago,” she said.

Broadway said she wants something to be done before something terrible happens.

Washington spoke with Ross Cavitt, Cobb County communications director, who said the new traffic calming policy now gives GDOT the opportunity to analyze traffic patterns and better address problems like speeding.

“They can put dynamic speed limit signs. They can put the median in the road, that slows traffic down,” Cavitt said.

Broadway proposed placing a roundabout or stop sign on the road to encourage drivers to slow down before reaching a bend in the road.

“Give them a reason not to go so fast,” Broadway said.

GDOT plans to analyze the road. If they find a speed problem, they will create a plan to fix it and present it to residents.
