August 5 – The August Cumberland County general election was unopposed, but several candidates won unopposed because there were no candidates running against them on the Democratic Party ticket.
They won the primaries earlier this year, but the results of the general election on August 1 make it official.
Turnout in the state primary and county general elections was low, as only 8.98% of registered voters in Cumberland County cast ballots, or 4,321 out of a total of 48,126, according to the Cumberland County Election Commission.
The unofficial results from the Cumberland County Election Commission are as follows, with all 24 precincts participating in the Cumberland County primary:
Kelli Tipton Buchannon won the Assessor of Property election with 3,526 votes.
In the race for the Cumberland County Board of Education 2nd District, Scott VanWinkle won with 234 votes.
In the 4th District, Anita Hale received 442 votes.
In the 6th District, Chris King received 341 votes.
In the 8th District, Travis R. Cole received 329 votes.
Wiley Potter of the 1st Civil District was the only candidate to file his name to be on the ballot for the county’s vacant county commission seat in the General Election. Potter received 282 votes.
Dewey Walker resigned earlier this year after moving out of the district.
There was no opposing candidate, as no Democrats ran against them.
Criminal Judge Part III 13th Judicial District unexpired term candidate Shawn Fry received 3,438 votes. He had no opponents.
In the state’s Republican primary, incumbent U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn received 3,170 votes, while Tres Wittum received 246 votes.
In the Democratic primaries, Gloria Johnson received 663 votes; Marquita Bradshaw 79; Lola Denise Brown 19; and Civil Miller-Watkins 19.
The incumbent Republican primary for the 6th District of the House of Representatives was won by John Rose with 3,129 votes.
In the Democratic primary for the 6th District of the House of Representatives, Lore Bergman received 318 votes, Clay Faircloth received 268 votes and Cyril Focht received 129 votes.
In the Republican primary for the 25th District of the Tennessee House of Representatives, incumbent Representative Cameron Sexton received 3,257 votes.
In the Democratic primary for the 25th District of the Tennessee House of Representatives, Wesley M. Adkins received 697 votes.
During the remaining term of the Democratic State Committeeman in District 15, Troy Smith received 666 votes.
On the question of preserving the judiciary, Supreme Court Justice Dwight Tarwater received 2,913 votes to uphold the decision.
In the Western Division of the Court of Criminal Appeals, Matthew J. Wilson received 2,931 votes, which he was required to retain.
The election results become official after the Cumberland County Election Commission meets and certifies the results.
These results apply to Cumberland County only.
Newly elected district officials take office on September 1.
