How do the NFL Playoffs work?

A total of fourteen teams will participate in the NFL playoffs, seven from each conference, with twelve knockout games played over three weekends to decide who reaches the Super Bowl.

Teams from each conference are separated until the Super Bowl and in each round the highest remaining seed plays at home against the lowest seed.

The top players in each conference – the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC and the Detroit Lions in the NFC – have a bye into the first round, known as Wildcard Weekend, in which six games are played between numbers two and seven.

The winners then join the top seeds in the Divisional Round, and the four winners meet there in the Conference Championships – essentially the semifinals of the Super Bowl, as the two winners earn the right to play their Conference in the big game represent.

When is the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl 59 will take place on February 9 (kick-off 23:30 GMT) in New Orleans at the Superdome, which has hosted more Super Bowls than any other stadium (seven).

It will be the first time the game has been played in New Orleans since 2013 and the 11th time overall – a joint record with Miami.
