Do you think you have what it takes to become New Jersey’s first-ever rock-paper-scissors champion?
This March, the New Jersey Lottery will host the Rock Paper Scissors Throwdown, the first-ever contest of its kind in the state.
The throwdown, which takes place March 29 and 30 at the American Dream in East Rutherford, will feature 384 participants playing rock-paper-scissors in a total of 383 matches.
The top 12 finishers of the tournament will receive a share of $25,000 in prize money and the first prize winner will take home $10,000.
The rules
While most of us probably know the general idea of rock paper scissors, the NJ Lottery Rock Paper Scissors Throwdown website points out a few specific rules that competitors must adhere to during the tournament.
First, each game is started by each player saying in unison, “Rock, paper, scissors, shoot,” while simultaneously “smacking the throwing hand into the palm of the non-throwing hand.” If the two players are not synchronized, the referee will help establish synchronization.
Whatever shape a player throws during the game, obviously it should be rock, paper or scissors, it should be easily recognizable.
Two matches will be held simultaneously on the American Dream Stage, starting with the top three of the five matches. The finals are the best four out of seven.
Tournament referees will be present to “ensure that the competition is fair and equal.” They will be allowed to make statements such as ‘do it again’. Any rulings made by the referee are not subject to questions or disputes, according to the official website.
