The number of jobless claims in North Carolina fell last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.
The number of new applications for unemployment benefits, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 2,873 in the week ended Aug. 31, from 3,079 the week before, the Labor Department said.
U.S. jobless claims fell to 227,000 last week, down 5,000 from 232,000 claims the previous week, after seasonal adjustment.
Rhode Island saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 43.3%. North Dakota, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decrease in new claims, with claims dropping 68.8%.
