August 23 – The National Weather Service (NWS) office in La Crosse, Wisconsin, will hold a public meeting on Saturday, September 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This will be a fun, free event for the entire family, no matter the weather. The theme is “Unleash the Meteorologist in You!” In addition to tours of the offices to showcase the NWS’s weather forecasting and warning services and equipment, the event will also feature a variety of outdoor activities and games for all ages.
Additionally, there will be several raffles throughout the day for weather-related prizes. Several NWS partner agencies and groups will also be on hand to showcase their unique work and equipment to keep the public safe.
Visitors can get an up-close look at fire trucks, sheriff’s and incident command vehicles, a highway snowplow and other unique vehicles. WAFER Food Pantry will also be collecting voluntary donations of nonperishable food to support the greater La Crosse community.
“We are so excited to plan this open house event to promote weather safety and the lifesaving work the National Weather Service and our partner organizations do every day in our local communities,” said Mike Kurz, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NWS La Crosse. “We want our open house attendees to meet our dedicated NWS staff and see firsthand how we create the forecasts and issue severe weather warnings for their communities.”
