NYPD detective arrested for domestic violence after previously pleading guilty in wife fight

An off-duty NYPD detective was arrested on Staten Island and charged with assault — his second arrest in just over a year, according to police.

Douglas MacEwen, 42, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, police said. While details of the alleged assault were not immediately available, police said the incident was domestic in nature.

In September 2023, MacEwen was arrested and charged with assault after his wife claimed he “pushed her to the ground and punched her ear” during a 4:30 a.m. argument at their Staten Island home, the Daily News previously reported.

In that case, MacEwen pleaded guilty to “involvement in a physical altercation” and “endangering the welfare of a child,” and was ordered to undergo counseling and be placed on probation for a year, according to department records. He was also suspended without pay for 10 days and given 10 days of vacation, according to NYPD disciplinary records.

MacEwen joined the NYPD in 2005 and was promoted to detective in 2021, according to department personnel records. He is currently assigned as a detective in Brooklyn.

The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why MacEwen was allowed to keep his job and rank after his guilty plea in 2023, and what discipline he could face in the latest arrest.

In 2019, MacEwen was reportedly arrested for drunken driving in Staten Island.
