A father and his adult son were both shot in the head in a Bronx apartment on Wednesday in what is being investigated as a murder-suicide, police said.
The younger man was an NYPD officer and was shot by his father in a bedroom while he was sleeping, a police spokesman said.
The father then lay down next to his son and took his own life, police added.
The father used his son’s gun in the shootings, police said.
Police identified the slain officer as Alexis Martinez, 26.
He joined the NYPD in 2018 and was assigned to the Bronx Narcotics Unit, according to police records. He had also worked at the 34th Precinct in Upper Manhattan.
Martinez was a member of a police officer’s baseball team.
When he failed to show up for a game on Wednesday, his teammates arrived at his apartment on Fteley Ave around noon. near E. 172nd St. in Soundview, police said.
Officers found both men dead of gunshot wounds to the head.
Police said they found a gun in the bedroom and shell casings at the crime scene.
The dead officer was visiting his father’s home and was not living with him full-time, police sources said.
Many of those officers who went to the house looking for their baseball teammate were still on the scene in their baseball jerseys as of Wednesday afternoon.
Officers stood in silence and saluted the officer as he was wheeled into a waiting police ambulance at the scene.
Police continued their investigation on Wednesday evening and did their best to notify the deceased officer’s mother.
