On today’s date: San Antonio’s record snowstorm

Snow in Texas is not unusual. We just saw that with Winter Storm Cora.

But on January 13, 1985, forty years ago today, one of Texas’ largest cities was digging out after a historic snowstorm.

A typical Texas snow even covers areas near and north and west of Dallas-Ft. Worth. However, this mid-January 1985 snowstorm dumped up to 18 inches of snow across a wide swath of south-central Texas.

San Antonio picked up 40 inches of snow, most of which fell in 24 hours, the city’s all-time record snowstorm. Only once had they picked up as much as 6 inches of snow during a storm, and that was in late January 1926.

As you can imagine, this brought the city to a standstill. For the first time, crews were called to clear the runways at San Antonio International Airport.

Scenes of piled snow at both The Alamo and the city’s famous Riverwalk were a sight to behold.

The last time measurable snow fell at the city’s airport was about four years ago, during back-to-back snowfalls — 1.2 inches, and another 1 inch two days later — and the historic cold snap of mid-February 2021.
