One person is dead and several people are injured after a mass shooting on the Tuskegee University campus during the school’s 100th homecoming weekend.
The shooting occurred early Sunday morning on campus and resulted in the death of a non-university individual, said Thonnia Lee, university spokeswoman. The total number of injured has not yet been confirmed, but students are included.
“The parents of this individual have been notified,” a statement from the university said. “Several others, including Tuskegee University students, were injured and are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.
“Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation. The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. becomes available.”
The person killed was a man, but authorities had not yet identified him.
The shooting took place on campus near West Commons.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the shooting.
