One of the men charged with the murder of Hopewell Child was already in prison for separate murder

William Jamal Claiborne, left, was killed nearly six months after P’Aris Mi-Unique Moore was shot dead in Hopewell. A Hopewell man is charged with both murders.

HOPEWELL – One of the suspects charged with the murder of an eight-year-old girl last December is also charged with a separate murder that took place less than two months ago.

Forty-two days before being charged Tuesday with the alleged murder of P’Aris Mi-Unique Moore, 20-year-old Jamari Antonio Taylor of Hopewell was arrested for the death of 28-year-old William Jamal Claiborne of Hopewell. Claiborne was shot on June 24 in the parking lot of Langston Park Apartments on Winston Churchill Drive and found dead a few blocks away on Palm Street.

In the Claiborne case, Taylor faces a second-degree murder charge, as does Kristopher Lorenzo Miller, 19, of Chesterfield County. Each also has a count of using a firearm in the commission of a crime against them

In the Moore case, Taylor and Raquan Latrel Harveyl, 18, of Chesterfield County, have been charged with first-degree murder and related weapons, including using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Taylor also faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Taylor was in Prince George County’s Riverside Regional Jail on second-degree murder charges when he was arraigned in the child’s death on Aug. 8.

P’Aris was just days away from her ninth birthday when she was shot in the chest on December 30, 2022 outside a relative’s home in eastern Hopewell. Police said at the time they believed she was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting after witnesses reported seeing a light-colored car drive away around the time she was shot.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting in Claiborne. Officers arrived on the scene after neighbors reported hearing multiple shots in the apartment complex.

Taylor and Miller were arrested four days after Claiborne’s death.

Taylor will appear in Hopewell Circuit Court on Wednesday to answer charges over the girl’s death. His preliminary hearing on the Claiborne case is scheduled for October 23 at Hopewell General District Court.

P’Aris was Hopewell’s ninth murder victim of 2022. Claiborne’s death was the city’s fifth homicide this year.
