Weightlifter Hampton Morris made history Wednesday by becoming the first American to win a weightlifting medal at the Olympics since 1984. Morris won bronze with a total of 298 kilograms, while China’s Li Fabin won gold with 310 kilograms and Thailand’s Theerapong Silachai won silver with 303 kilograms.

The 20-year-old, 61-kilo Morris trains mainly in his garage at home. He has quickly risen to the top and has set no fewer than 10 world records in the youth, junior and senior age categories.

“It’s amazing that I can make such a mark on the sport,” Morris said. “I just can’t believe it.”

Mario Martinez (silver) and Guy Carlton (bronze) last won a medal for the United States at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. With the Games returning to LA in 2028, Morris is looking to continue his success on home soil.

“The only thing I can hope for now is that in four years I’ll be doing even better in LA,” he said.
