Pennsylvania grandmother fell into sinkhole looking for cat that was found dead after four days of searching

The Pennsylvania grandmother who fell through a sinkhole while searching for her cat has been found dead after a four-day search, officials say.

Elizabeth Pollard, 64, was last seen Monday around 5 p.m. in Unity Township, about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It was believed that she had fallen through a sinkhole and into a decades-old mine shaft, which was estimated to be at least thirty feet deep.

Her body was found Friday, Pittsburgh NBC affiliate WPXI reported, citing state police. On Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police told reporters that the nature of the search was shifting from a rescue mission to a recovery mission.

Pollard was reported missing by a family member on Monday.

State troopers discovered her car parked at a restaurant, with her 5-year-old granddaughter still inside. Despite the freezing temperatures, the granddaughter was in good condition, he said.

About 15 to 20 feet from Pollard’s car, authorities found the sinkhole.

This is a development story. Check back later for updates.
