NEW YORK — A home invasion in Washington Heights which ended with a fatal fall is being investigated by the police.
The NYPD said 73-year-old Jacinto Remigio fell from the window of his sixth-floor apartment on 161st Street just before 5 a.m. Saturday and landed on scaffolding on the second floor. The circumstances surrounding his fall are currently unknown.
Police are looking for three suspects, adding that it is unclear whether they knew the people in the home and why they targeted the specific apartment.
Here’s what police say led to the fall
According to detectives, the incident began when the suspects broke into that apartment. Surveillance footage shows one of them entering the building and using the elevator to get to the sixth floor, where he waited for the other two to climb the fire escape before letting them inside.
Investigators said that once inside the apartment, the three perpetrators tied up a 40-year-old man and stole an $8,000 gold chain along with $200 cash. That man was not injured, but when officers arrived at the apartment, they found his father, Remigio, on the dock.
Police said he fell out of the window and was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital.
