A police chase that began in Rochester ended in a fatal crash in Brighton Thursday afternoon, Rochester police said.
Rochester police were called to Maria Street, near Clifford Avenue, around 3:15 p.m. to investigate a report of shots fired in the area. They encountered a teen who tried to drive away but crashed. Officers then briefly pursued him on foot and jumped into another vehicle, Rochester police Capt. Greg Bello said.
Three teens fled in the stolen car, and officers “engaged them in a chase” through the city toward Brighton, Bello said. The chase ended at East and Linden avenues when the teens drove south and struck another vehicle at the intersection. An elderly man in that vehicle died at the scene, Bello said.
The teens, who ranged in age from 13 to 18, were also injured in the crash and were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of “various injuries that were quite serious,” Bello said at the scene Thursday.
New York State Police assisted Rochester police with the pursuit and are assisting in the investigation into the fatal crash. One handgun was seized in connection with the investigation.
RPD has notified the New York State Attorney General’s Office of the chase and fatal crash. The attorney general’s office will lead the investigation into the actions of RPD officers and state troopers in connection with the chase and crash, Bello said. RPD’s Major Crimes Unit will also investigate the three teens and the fatal crash.
No further details have been released.
