Police on Cape Cod investigate vandalism, police use footprints in the snow to find suspects

FALMOUTH – Falmouth police are investigating a vandalism that damaged dozens of properties. Under the cover of darkness and a snowstorm, investigators said vandals headed into town around Crooked Meadow Road.

Mailboxes were kicked over, light fixtures were smashed and fences damaged, and that’s just a short list. A Department of Public Works employee in Falmouth who was sanding roads reported significant property damage.

More than fifty buildings have been destroyed

Officers responded around 2:28 a.m. Monday and discovered vandalism at more than 50 properties on Crooked Meadow Road, Pinecrest Beach Drive, Sandpoint Shores Drive, Cottontail Circle, Shagbark Drive, Happy Hollow Road and Blacksmith Shop Road.

Loralynn Teixeira woke up Monday morning to police knocking on her door and saying they found her mailbox on the floor, covered in leaves and ice.

“I don’t know what kids, or anyone, really gets out of something like this. Does this excite you? I don’t get it, there’s nothing better to do,” Teixeira said.

Neighbors like Richard Boudreau had their mailboxes dented.

“Kids do stupid things and I’m sure these kids are so sorry about this right now, that doesn’t make it right, but at the same time no one got hurt,” Boudreau said. “Don’t commit crimes in the snow, I guess that’s the moral of that story.”

There were cameras in the community, but some were not running, which is changing for neighbors.

“It could have been worse, mailboxes are better than houses and cars, but still,” Teixeira said.

The police track down footprints in the snow

Thanks to the snow on the ground, the suspected vandals left their footprints for investigators to track and find. Police said charges are expected to be filed against those responsible as investigations continue.

Falmouth Police are asking for the community’s help.

Neighbors who may have captured footage of the vandalism of home security systems are asked to contact police.
