Putin claims that western Poland is a gift from Stalin

Vladimir Putin

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has described western Polish territory as a “gift” from Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, claiming that it was his actions that led to Poland getting this territory from Germany after World War II.

“The western areas of present-day Poland are a gift from Stalin to the Poles. Have our friends in Warsaw forgotten this? We will remind you,” Putin threatened during a meeting with members of Russia’s Security Council on July 21.

The dictator also instructed the director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergei Naryshki, to keep an eye on Poland’s possible intention to “occupy western Ukraine”. There is no evidence that this is a possibility.

In Putin’s imagination, a “Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian security initiative” could “occupy” Western Ukraine. He has provided no evidence for this.

He threatened Poland with the loss of its independence because of “such aggressive policies”. Putin also claimed that Poland owes its independence to the Soviet Union.

On May 21, Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Russian State Duma, blamed Poland for “betraying historical memory” and claimed it owed Moscow more than $750 billion for liberating Nazi Germany and rebuilding the country.

“Russia has been good at turning things upside down for centuries to give our eyes the wind,” said Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, commenting on Volodin’s absurd claims.
