Rain chances will return later this week

Lighter winds are expected on Wednesday, but there will still be breezy to breezy conditions. Rain chances return from Thursday.

Even stronger winds returned to parts of New Mexico Tuesday afternoon. The strongest winds today were along and north of I-40, where west winds are gusting from 40 to over 60 mph. Temperatures were warmer across the state today, with highs warmer than average again. Winds will slowly decrease this evening, but will remain breezy in northern New Mexico through Wednesday morning. Lighter winds are expected Wednesday afternoon, but westerly winds could still reach gusts of 20 to 50 mph across the state.

Changes are in store starting Thursday as a backdoor cold front will move across the state and move into the Rio Grande Valley starting Thursday morning, bringing gusty winds from the east. While most of New Mexico will see light winds Thursday, the Rio Grande Valley could see gusts as high as 35 miles per hour. The front will also bring some afternoon showers to central and northern New Mexico, with a mix of wet and dry showers.

Easterly winds will increase late Thursday evening in the Albuquerque metro, with gusts up to 60 mph possible through Friday morning. The increase in easterly winds will also draw better moisture into the state. This increase in low moisture levels will also help bring more afternoon showers to eastern, northern and central New Mexico. Another round of afternoon showers and thunderstorms will develop on Saturday afternoon, with more isolated showers possible on Sunday.

Early next week, the chances of showers and afternoon thunderstorms will continue to increase.
