Rain, snow and wind to follow for Thursday’s commute around NYC

NEW YORK– A wintery mix of rain, snow and strong wind will blow into New York City on Thursday, and the biggest impact could occur during the morning commute.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Sullivan and Ulster counties north of the city, but the five boroughs are not expecting much accumulation from this system.

You’re basically dressing for the 30s on Wednesday – not to mention the wind will pick up and there may be a few drops or flakes. The sun we have in the morning will therefore not be present all day.

Keep in mind that the numbers were up yesterday, but down today. Still, today will feel more like Juneau, Alaska, as their high is only expected to be around 46.

It conveniently looks and feels like winter in front of Rockefeller Center’s tree lighting tonight. But our weather pattern is starting to change, so there will be more clouds in the mix by then.

There is currently a clipper system racing through the Great Lakes. Tomorrow morning it will be on top of us, and tomorrow afternoon it will be gone.

Temperatures will actually rise overnight, so any precipitation for the city will be liquid and pointed south, and could be more of the winter variety north. The problem Thursday will be snow reaching the ground as temperatures will be quite warm at night and the freezing line will be to the north. Once most of the moisture is gone, temperatures will drop throughout the day as the sun returns.

Winter weather advisories call for at least an inch or two of snow in Sullivan and Ulster counties. Closer to town, accumulations will only be about an inch or two, and that’s if we’re lucky. Otherwise, the wet flakes will not accumulate, with the exception of grass surfaces and car roofs.

As for winds, they peak around 45-50 mph during the day. That said, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for much of the area. The MTA banned empty tractor-trailers and tandem trailers from bridges Thursday between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. due to high winds.

It will be nice to see some of our suburbs receive their first measurable snow of the season, but this pattern looks to be very short-lived, with the return of milder temperatures and precipitation in the form of rain next week.
