Rangers and Islanders reach scenarios heading into the final week of the season

Well, hockey fans, we’ve officially made it. It’s pretty crazy to think that next week the 2024 edition of the Stanley Cup Playoffs will be in full swing.

For us New York sports fans, however, we can’t look ahead yet, as both the Rangers and Islanders still have something to play for.

With one game remaining for the Blueshirts and two for the Islanders, here’s a look at their winning scenarios for this week…

Rangers

On Broadway it’s pretty simple.

Win the final game of the regular season against the Ottawa Senators on Monday and you will clinch the Metropolitan Division, the Eastern Conference and the fourth Presidents Trophy berth in franchise history.

When you lose, things get a little more complicated.

Carolina has one game remaining, and after scoring three third-period goals in a comeback win over the Blackhawks on Sunday night, they trail the Blueshirts by just one point in the Metro and league standings.

So with a loss to the Rangers on Monday, they’ll have to hope the Canes lose to the Blue Jackets in regulation on Tuesday night or they’ll end up in second place after leading the division for the past few months.

Dallas also has one game remaining, Wednesday night against the St. Louis Blues, and they are also one point behind the Blueshirts in the race for their Presidents Trophy.

So again, the simple scenario for the Rangers: if they hope to secure all three spots in one night, they just get a baby win.

Islanders

The Islanders, currently in third place in the Metro behind the Rangers and Hurricanes, can also qualify with a road win against the Devils on Monday night.

New York can still guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs if they lose in overtime, securing just one point in the standings, but they need the Red Wings and/or Capitals to lose either way .

They can also still lock up the three seed in the Metropolitan Division if they lose in overtime, but to do that they need the Capitals to lose in any manner, or Washington to lose in regulation and the Penguins to to lose in any way.

However, none of that will matter if the Isles manage to beat the Devils.

Patrick RoyThe side’s squad has been red hot throughout, winning seven of their last ten games as they look to complete the end-of-season turnaround to secure their fifth play-off appearance in their last six seasons.
