Rangers trade for Alex Wennberg

The Rangers are trading for the Seattle Kraken center Alex Wennberg.

In return, the Rangers will send a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2025. Seattle will keep 50 percent of Wennberg’s salary.

New York has reportedly tried to add multiple centers after youth Filip Chytil suffered a season-ending setback in late January on his way back from an upper-body injury.

Wennberg became one of the best remaining centers available after failing to agree to a long-term deal with the Kraken, and the Blueshirts were seen as one of the finalists.

Now that he has been officially taken over, the 29-year-old figure will be standing next to it Jimmy Vesey and star rookie Will Cuylle on the third line for the leaders of the Metropolitan Division.

While Wennberg isn’t exactly an elite scorer, he plays a solid two-way game and should get New York’s lineup deeper down the stretch.

The former first-round pick has spent time on both special teams units, contributing nine goals and 16 assists while also leading Seattle with 65 blocked shots on the season.

Wennberg’s three-year, $13.5 million deal, which he signed with the expansion club in 2021, expires this season, making him an unrestricted free agent.
