Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Sunday compared a “public philosophy” he said was developed by President Trump’s former administration to a model similar to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“During the Trump administration, we saw the development of an entirely new public philosophy, which is that government is not an instrument of the common,” Raskin said on ABC’s “This Week.” “Government is an instrument of private self-enrichment for the man who comes in, his family, for his private businesses.”
Raskin noted that he does not approve of this model, saying, “That’s what Putin is doing.” He called on House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) to conduct an analysis of what the laws should be about making money in government.
Raskin responded to a series of questions asking if foreign business dealings by President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, concerned him at all. He deviated, instead expressing concerns about former President Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner during the previous administration.
“And I am concerned, not just about government officials like Donald Trump and Jared Kushner, but even family members riding along and I have begged my colleague, Chairman Comer, to do a serious analysis of what the laws should be about make money,” he said.
Trump’s business dealings during his time as president have been the subject of scrutiny by House Democrats. Raskin criticized the Republicans for focusing only on the Biden family’s dealings and not on their own party’s president. Comer, as Oversight chairman, leads congressional investigations into the Biden family business transactions.
“And we’re going to do a report on all the foreign government emoluments, millions of dollars. We can document that Donald Trump slumped in the hotels on the golf courses for business deals when he was president and that his family got,” he said. added. “But they didn’t put a gauntlet on Joe Biden. As president, they have not been able to demonstrate any criminal corruption on his part – what they have is Hunter Biden.
