Rep. Jamie Raskin demands details about American citizens who have been overtaken in ice enforcement

The top democrat in the house Judiciary Committee asks the Trump government to explain something about American citizens who had become entangled in recent enforcement actions for immigration.

Following a report from NBC News, Rep. Jamie Raskin, member of the house Judiciary Committee and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the subcommittee of the subcommittee, since January 20 to accounting for immigration enforcement actions.

The request was made in a letter signed by Raskin, D-MD., And Jayapal, D-Wash., Whose subcommittee supervises immigration. It was sent to the Minister of Interior Security Kristi and Caleb Vitello, immigration and customs enforcement director on Tuesday. A copy of the letter was first provided to NBC News.

“If you are not looking for criminals based on crimes, but non -papers immigrants based on their appearance, you will sweep many innocent people, including innocent civilians,” Raskin said in a statement to NBC News. “We have already seen cases of racial and ethnic profiling that lead to the illegal detention of American citizens. That is why I demand answers about some of these deeply disturbing stories that we have heard about citizens who are the target, hold and interrogate. “

The legislators noted that according to an ice policy of 2015 with regard to investigation by American citizens, “ICE cannot trade on the enforcement of civil immigration to arrest and/or retaining an American citizen.” And ice officers and agents and lawyers must handle the interactions with the “greatest care and highest priority,” the letter said.

“This principle is essential to prevent the escalating government attack on immigrants becoming steam roller that crushes the rights of American citizens,” said the letter from the legislators.

ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comments from NBC News on Tuesday.

The recent cases have led to complaints that some people are racially profiled, focused on ice because of their breed or skin color.

At the end of last month, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said that Navajo citizens who live outside of reservation had complained that they were interviewed about their identity by ICE officers. Nygren spoke about the complaints in a radio address.

A business owner in New Jersey where ICE has carried out a raid said that one of his employees who is a veteran and was made from Puerto Rico to show officers’ identification. NBC news attempts to reach the veteran were not successful. Employees who answered phone calls on Tuesday from the owner said he is conducting media interviews.

Although it was not mentioned in the letter, the Mescalalo Apache stem in New Mexico announced that one of his members was approached by an ice agent who spoke in Spanish. The Mescalero Apache member speaks English and told the ice agent. The ice agent then asked for his passport, the tribe said in his announcement.

ICE did not respond last week to questions from NBC News about holding the Navajo citizens and the veteran.

The letter from the legislators also quoted a January Telemundo Puerto Rico notification that a toddler, his mother and grandmother in Milwaukee were held and sent to a detention center. ICE has since said that the report was incorrect.

The letter asks ICE and DHS to provide the total number of American citizens on 18 February at 5 pm; the name and age of detained American citizens; Where and how long they were held; Whether someone had a criminal record and what the crimes were, if present; And the name of each agency involved in the enforcement campaign.

The legislators also ask whether ICE’s policy with regard to meetings with American citizens is still in force, and if not, what policy or procedures it has. They also ask if there have been updates for policy and procedures since the incidents of last month.

Concern about ICE confrontations with American citizens have led to conference investigations in earlier administrations. A report issued by the Government Accountability Office during the BIDEN administration showed that ICE had arrested 674 potential American citizens from 1 October 2015 to March 2020, retained 121 and removed 70. The report noted that at the time, IJs had a conflict policy on American citizens and his encounters were not properly kept up with American citizens.
