Rescue teams get 1,500 tonnes of oil from a Russian tanker

Moscow (AP)-Rescue workers have successfully removed nearly 1,500 tonnes of oil that was left on board a tanker that was on the ground in South Russia last year, said officials on Saturday. The accident resulted in a devastating oil lamp that damaged kilometers (kilometers) coastline along the Black Sea.

Two Russian ships, the Volvoneft-239 and the Volonont-24, were badly damaged on December 15 during stormy weather, causing thousands of tons of low-quality fuel oil, called Mazut, to the Strait of Kertsj.

A crew of the Russian Navy Rescue Service, the remaining 1,488 tons of oil left over that was lagging behind in the VolvoneZEFT-239 on the ground in a six-day operation, said the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev on Saturday in a message on the official Telegram channel of the Russian government.

Minister of emergency situations Alexander Kurenkov announced earlier this month that the damaged tanker would be drained, but workers discovered that oil was still leaking in the water.

The Volvoneft-279 will now be cleaned and prepared for dismantling, Savelyev said. The fate of the second tanker, the Volonont-2112, remains undecided after the boat sank under the waves.

So far, oil has been washed up from the leaks along beaches in the Russian region of Krasnodar, as well as in the Ukrainian regions of Crimea and Berdyansk Spit, which was occupied by Russia, about 145 kilometers (90 miles) north of the Strait of Kertsj. President Vladimir Putin previously called the leak in January “one of the most serious environmental problems that we have had to deal with in recent years.”

The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations said on Saturday that so far more than 173,000 tons of contaminated sand and land has been collected during the weeks of cleaning work, in which thousands of volunteers participated in the operation.
