A recent survey by food and drink website Tasting Table found that Rochester is among the best cities in the U.S. for beer lovers, even topping New York State.
The study evaluated metrics such as the number of breweries, bars and beer tasting rooms and the average cost of beer to rank the top 15 destinations.
Asheville, North Carolina, topped the list. Rochester was 13th. The Flower City has 0.87 breweries and 10.66 bars per 10,000 residents, it said, and it had two beer tasting rooms. The average price of a pint here is $4.25, it said.
New York had six cities in the top 100 beer destinations: Rochester, Buffalo, Poughkeepsie, Albany, New York City and Syracuse. Buffalo came in just a few spots behind Rochester, at 16th. It has 1.02 breweries and 9.90 bars per 10,000 residents, and one beer-tasting tour. An average pint costs $4.40, the study found.

How the cities were ranked
To identify the best cities for beer lovers in 2024, Tasting Table analyzed cities from the World’s Best Cities Top 100 Best American Cities list. It pulled data on the number of breweries per 10,000 residents from RateBeer, the number of top-rated bars from CraftBeer, the number of bars from Yellow Pages, the number of beer tasting rooms from TripAdvisor, and the average cost of a pint of domestic beer from Numbeo. It also included population data for each city from Census.gov. Cities were ranked based on their statistics; as of July 26, 2024.
