The European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas warned on Wednesday of a possible attack by Russia in the coming years.
“Many of our national intelligence services are giving us information that Russia could test the EU’s willingness to defend itself within three to five years,” she said during a speech at the European Defense Agency’s annual conference in Brussels.
“Russia is not the problem for some, but for all of us. Europeans must wake up,” she urged.
Moscow currently spends almost five times more on defense than the EU, Kallas added, calling for an increase in spending.
“Europe’s inability to invest in military capabilities also sends a dangerous signal to the aggressor. Weakness invites them in.”
“We have to prepare. There is nothing that cannot be used against us today,” Kallas said, without giving further details about the intelligence information.
Kallas also said that work was underway on the 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia over its large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The EU and its member states have provided Ukraine with a total of more than 134 billion euros in aid, including almost 50 billion euros in military aid, Kallas said.
