Russian troops carry out a major offensive in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv

Russian troops have launched a major offensive along the front near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported from Kiev on Friday.

Russian ground forces, supported by armor, had begun advancing at 5 a.m. local time (0200 GMT) in an attempt to break through defense lines, the ministry said.

The target of the attack is said to be Vovchansk, a city on the Russian border, about 40 kilometers northeast of Kharkiv.

The attack had so far been repulsed, but fighting continued, the Defense Ministry said.

There has been speculation in Ukraine for weeks about a Russian summer offensive, with reports that tens of thousands of troops have gathered in the region.

The fact that the news was published by the Ministry of Defense and not by the General Staff, as usual, is taken as a sign of the seriousness of the situation.

“Reserves have been brought in to strengthen defenses along this part of the front,” the ministry said.

On Thursday, Russian aircraft attacked the Vovchansk front with glide bombs, and overnight Russian artillery bombarded Ukrainian positions.

Russian military blogger Rybar said the initial purpose of the offensive was to expand the combat zone and identify Ukrainian defensive positions.
