Ryan Day hired security at his home due to threats following Ohio State’s loss to Michigan

Ohio State coach Ryan Day wasn’t taking any chances after his team’s loss to Michigan at the end of the regular season.

According to the Athletic, security personnel were stationed at Day’s home in the days following the Buckeyes’ loss. Ohio State lost 13-10 at home to the Wolverines and missed a chance to play for the Big Ten title. It was Ohio State’s fourth straight loss against their hated rivals.

From athletics:

In late November, after Ohio State lost for the fourth straight time to archrival Michigan — at home, as a three-touchdown favorite — the moment seemed unfathomable to perhaps everyone but the Buckeyes themselves. Day’s family, especially the coach’s three children, bore the brunt of the wrath of some Ohio State fans as they lost again to the hated Wolverines. Threats were made which led to the Days receiving 24-hour police protection.

“There was security at our house. School was really bad,” said Day’s son RJ, a sophomore in high school The Athletics. “I didn’t really leave the house until after the Tennessee game (three weeks after the Michigan game, in the first round of the CFP). It was tough, but you have to persevere in those difficult times, because eventually things will turn around.”

The rhetoric after the Michigan loss was popular, especially after a post-game brawl after Michigan players tried to plant a flag on the field. Day’s job was even publicly questioned by some due to his record against Michigan, despite his overall success. Ohio State has lost just 10 times in 80 games under Day and four of those losses were to Michigan. But that record against the Wolverines isn’t even close to an excuse for why anyone would threaten a head coach.

It is understood that Day will now remain Ohio State’s coach. And any Michigan-related heat should cool off for quite some time. The Buckeyes entered the first 12-team College Football Playoff as a No. 8 seed on Monday night, winning each of their postseason games by two possessions en route to the team’s first national title in a decade on Monday night. Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 34-23 in one of the most remarkable upsets in recent college football memory.

Ohio State fans were downbeat after the regular season. They’re cheering now.

“What makes Ohio State great is its fan base, and for all those fans who are going through tough times in their lives, to hang in there and fight like our players did this season, I hope it serves as an inspiration, because that’s exactly what happened here,” Day said at his press conference after the Notre Dame win. “And there was a point in the season where a lot of people discounted us, but we kept fighting and overcame those adversities because that’s what life is about.

“There are life lessons learned here, and I hope that maybe there are just a few people who are going through a tough time and keep fighting and keep swinging and they turn things around.”
