The Buffalo Sabres have a fair amount of cap space to work with as we inch closer to the start of the 2024-25 season. They only have one restricted free agent, Peyton Krebs, who isn’t in a position to demand much money, so the Sabres can certainly add to their roster if they want to.
One clear need the Sabres have is another top-six winger. While that is the case, it also appears they are open to improving their defensive depth. The Sabres are one of four teams that have expressed interest in Mark Giordano this offseason. Giordano’s agent, Ritch Winter, shared this during a recent appearance on Sportnet’s Flames Talk.
According to Winter, other teams that have shown interest in Giordano are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.
While the Sabres certainly have a solid defensive group, it makes sense that they would also be open to adding Giordano. His previous captaincy experience would make him an excellent mentor for the club’s younger defensemen, such as Owen Power, Bowen Byram, Rasmus Dahlin and Mattias Samuelsson.
Giordano, 40, played 46 games for the Maple Leafs last season, posting three goals, nine points, 51 hits and a plus-10 rating. The former Norris Trophy winner would give them another viable option for their bottom pair if signed.
We’ll have to wait and see if the Sabres’ interest in Giordano will lead to them bringing him here.
